In 2009 the Lift and Escalator Industry Association LEIA launched an objective to help make the public more safety conscious toward public lifts and escalators. Whilst these popular aids dramatically assist pedestrians there are of course potential hazards involved that people simply take for granted.
Its these hazards that people simply take for granted but the ones that cause the majority of accidents across the country, particularly in busy shopping areas and centres.
Escalators in particular require concentration from the pedestrian to assist safe transport up and down but many people lapse thief the escalator as they try to board or at the bottom of the escalator because their concentration is else where.
The LEIA campaign called Safe and Sound was launched to bring about awareness of the day to day hazards that we all take for granted in passengers lifts and escalators. Providing colourful posters and leaflets the campaign appears to be well received and as long as the objective in preventing avoidable accidents is achieved the campaign is obviously very worth while.
Some of the hazards the campaign focuses on include:
- Awareness in stepping on and off escalators
- Keeping hands, feet and loose clothing away from moving parts, in particular the standing area of escalators
- Not sitting on moving escalators
- And one of the most common, taking pushchairs and shopping trolleys on escalators
