Cornwall is to become one the first counties across the United Kingdom to offer a new support website offering special services for adults with learning and physical disabilities in and around the Cornwall area.
DotComUnity has been established to direct visitors to special support services including specialist information on employment, financial services and professional legal advice as well as offering information on events, social groups and providers of specialist mobility equipment.
The intention of the free resource website is to help improve the lives of many people with disabilities and also to help shape the future of local services.
Over 250 professional and specialist service providers have already enlisted on the website for Cornwall alone and include such local facilities as Freedom Surf based in Newquay which offers surfing activities for people with many types of disability and they also provide support and services for groups too.
The new website has been developed by Steve Piper, who has been employed in the care sector for over ten years. Speaking in a BBC interview Mr Piper commented:
"There are more than a million people in the UK with a learning disability who simply don't have the same control over their own lives as the rest of society and who often face social exclusion,"
"I wanted to use my professional experience in the care sector to create a resource that would empower users to live independent and rewarding lives in their own communities."
Free directory listings are to be presented to all service providers and a controlled roll-out across the United Kingdom is expected during the year.
